The True Nature of Jesus as God and Man
Text: Col 1:19 & Col 2:9
As we celebrate another week of Advent we remember that God has promised to send us a sign of his salvation ( Isaiah 7:14 ), that Jesus is God’s plan of salvation for the world and to spend time reflecting upon the nature of Jesus as both fully God and fully man.
- Col 1:15-19 – In these verses we see that “all of God’s fullness dwells” in Jesus. That is the sum total of the essence of God, all that makes God who he is – his being, power and attributes, is present in Jesus. He is fully God, through Him all thing were created and apart from him nothing in creation was made ( John 1:3 )
- Col 2:9 – Yet, even in having the full nature of God he came to earth and lived as a man.
- Phil 2:5-11 – In doing so he laid aside all presumptions of the privileges and honors of being God and presented himself as a servant to all mankind. In doing so he shows us how we ought to treat one another both in words and in actions. For we are blessed to be a blessing to others just as Abraham was ( Gen 12:2 ).
- John 20:19-20 – That he was raised, with a real body – not that of just a spirit or ghost, and appeared to His disciples who were also eye witnesses to his ascension ( Acts 1:9-11 ). In this we are also told that he will come back in the same way in which they saw him leave. In a real, but perfect, human body.
In thinking about Jesus coming to earth this season we should not lose sight of the fact that he is the creator and the depths of His love for us. Not only did He create us and all that we see – He stepped into His creation to redeem it. We are completed in Him and by our relationship with Him. Nothing else is required or lacking once we place our trust in Him. Nothing else can be added. He grace is sufficient!
